Allocation Review Committee

Allocation of primary and secondary species for both commercial and recreational fishing sectors are provided in fisheries management plans publications.

Management plans and PIRSA's Allocation Policy (PDF 500.4 KB) outline the process for setting and reviewing allocations.

There is a two-stage approach to reviewing allocations. The first stage is an initial assessment to determine whether a full assessment (the second stage) is necessary or appropriate.

Role of the committee

The Allocation Review Committee (ARC) was established in 2023 by the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development under the Fisheries Management Act 2007 to conduct full (stage 2) assessment of any allocation reviews that arise.

A full assessment is overseen by the Minster and considers:

  1. How the value of one or more sectors is changing and potential future trends.
  2. Options to be evaluated against maintaining the status quo, including:
    • contribution to Gross State Product
    • employment
    • access for consumers to fresh seafood
    • maintenance and growth of regional communities
    • health impacts
    • sport and recreation opportunities
    • consistency with tourism policies
    • other criteria relevant to the fishery.

The outcome of a full assessment will be a recommendation to either:

  • proceed to adjust shares
  • manage each sector within the existing allocated shares.
