At risk or dead marine mammals

Marine mammals include whales, dolphins, seals, and sea lions.

Report at risk or dead marine mammals

Call the 24-hour Fishwatch Hotline if you see marine mammals that are beached or stranded (whales and dolphins only), injured, or dead.

Seals and sea lions sleep and rest on beaches and structures – you do no need to report these sightings unless the animal is obviously injured or distressed.

Offences against marine mammals

It is an offence to kill, injure, or harass a marine mammal.

Report offences against marine mammals, as well as any sightings of dead or at-risk marine mammals, to the Department for Environment and Water.

Sick or stranded marine animals

If you find a sick or stranded marine mammal, contact your local Natural Resources Centre or marine wildlife rescue organisation. For more information, see the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Information to report

Give the following information when reporting:

  1. Your contact details, and any other witness contact details.
  2. Location of incident with as much detail as possible.
  3. Time and date the incident or when it was first noticed.
  4. Species or description of the animals, including size and number of animals involved.
  5. Weather conditions.
  6. Tide details.
  7. Accessibility by boat or vehicle.
  8. What offence you witnessed.
  9. A description of the person or vehicles involved in the offence.
  10. Any photographs or notes of the offence.
  11. Any other relevant details.

All information given to Fishwatch is treated with the strictest confidence.

Harmful algal bloom (HAB)

In mid-March 2025, a significant harmful algae bloom was identified in the waters around the Fleurieu Peninsula. This HAB is ongoing with health impacts for people and wildlife.
