Marine mammals include whales, dolphins, seals, and sea lions.


Report at risk or dead marine mammals

Call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 if you see sick or dead wildlife (including marine mammals and wild birds).

Call the local National Parks and Wildlife Service office if you see stranded whales or dolphins.

Seals and sea lions sleep and rest on beaches and structures – you don't need to report these sightings unless the animal is obviously injured or distressed.


Offences against marine mammals

It is an offence to kill, injure, or harass a marine mammal.

Report offences against marine mammals to the Department for Environment and Water.


Sick or stranded marine animals

If you see sick or dead wildlife (including marine mammals and wild birds), call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

If you see stranded whales or dolphins call the local National Parks and Wildlife Service office.


Information to report

Give the following information when reporting:

  1. Your contact details, and any other witness contact details.
  2. Location of incident with as much detail as possible.
  3. Time and date the incident or when it was first noticed.
  4. Species or description of the animals, including size and number of animals involved.
  5. Weather conditions.
  6. Tide details.
  7. Accessibility by boat or vehicle.
  8. What offence you witnessed.
  9. A description of the person or vehicles involved in the offence.
  10. Any photographs or notes of the offence.
  11. Any other relevant details.
