Fish processing
A fish processor is anyone involved in processing, storing, transporting, or dealing with fish or other aquatic resources, for a commercial process. Fish processing can also include:
- scaling
- gilling
- gutting
- filleting
- freezing
- chilling
- packing
- any other activity involved in preparing fish for sale.

Rules

Registration
Anyone processing fish or aquatic resources from South Australian commercial fishers or aquaculture farmers must be registered as a fish processor with PIRSA. Find out how to apply.
Electronic reporting
As of 1 November 2024, licence holders are required to submit their catch and effort electronically through the Commercial Fishing SA application.
Fishers can also access the myPIRSA portal and directly report their catch and effort electronically into the eCatch (Digital Reporting) Service.
Temporary abalone movement restrictions effective 27 May 2021
Following the detection of AVG at Cape Nelson in Victoria and in some New South Wales abalone processors in May 2021, temporary restrictions have been introduced on fresh abalone products coming into South Australia from interstate, including recreationally caught abalone.
Industry exemptions apply for fresh abalone product coming from a bio-secure facility such as a health accredited farm.
