Harvest of marine algae and seagrass
The consultation period closed on Friday 20 January 2023.
Feedback is being sought on an application for an exploratory fishing permit for the proposed harvest of live marine algae and beach-cast seagrass and algae wrack on the Eyre Peninsula.
Collectively referred to as 'wrack', beach-cast seagrass and marine algae are specific plant and algae species that detach from the seabed, wash up and accumulate on the shoreline. This material cannot reattach and will eventually desiccate and die.
Location of proposed activity
The area for the proposed activity is adjacent to the Eyre Peninsula in waters of South Australia near Coffin Bay. Further details on the area of operation can be found in the draft permit conditions.
Assessment process
PIRSA has conducted an ecologically sustainable development (ESD) risk assessment of the proposed activity to assess:
- risks and opportunities of the proposal
- the relative abundance of beach-cast seagrass and macroalgae in the area
- available scientific advice relating to the proposed operation.
To learn more about the assessment process, please see Exploratory and development permits.
