PIC registration property rules
A property is made up of 1 or more blocks of land, each of which has a Valuation Number. Your property must comply with rules for your Property Identification Code (PIC) to be valid.
This page provides help with the property Valuation Number requirements when renewing or updating your PIC via the myPIRSA Services online system.
Valuation Number error messages
Each Valuation Number error message that you may encounter when renewing or updating your PIC is described below:
- The following Valuation Numbers are not valid [Valuation Number(s)] – If you added them, please check that you have typed them correctly.
- At least 1 Valuation Number must be in the PIC zone specified by the first 2 digits of your PIC.
- Your Valuation Numbers are on different sides of the Spencer Gulf or the Gulf of St Vincent. Different PIC rules apply in these situations.
- Valuation Numbers on Kangaroo Island and mainland South Australia cannot be included on the same PIC.
- For a producer PIC where at least 1 Valuation Number is in the Hundreds region, all Valuation Numbers must be within 100 km of each other.
- For a producer PIC where all Valuation Numbers are in the Out of Hundreds region, the distance between the closest boundary of a Valuation Number to that of its nearest neighbouring Valuation Number must be within 100 km.
- For a non-producer PIC where at least 1 Valuation Number is in the Hundreds region, all Valuation Numbers must be within 5 km of each other.
- For a non-producer PIC where all Valuation Numbers are in the Out of Hundreds region, the distance between the closest boundary of a Valuation Number to that of its nearest neighbouring Valuation Number must be within 5 km.

Producer and non-producer PICs
A non-producer PIC is for:
- an abattoir
- a saleyard
- a showground.
All other Property Identification Codes are producer PICs for livestock.
Valuation Numbers needed on your PIC
You only need to include Valuation Numbers for the blocks of land on which you have, or will have over the next 12 months, prescribed livestock. For example, if you do not have livestock on your home block then you do not need to include it.
Prescribed livestock
Prescribed livestock includes these animals:
- alpacas
- buffalo
- camels
- cattle
- deer
- donkeys
- goats
- horses
- pigs
- sheep
Prescribed livestock also includes the following poultry species – if you are required to be accredited under the Primary Produce (Food Safety Schemes) Act 2004):
- chickens
- ducks
- geese
- guinea fowl
- mutton birds
- partridges
- pheasants
- pigeons
- quails
- turkeys.
Check a Valuation Number for your property
Your Valuation Numbers can be found on your Council Rate or Emergency Services Levy notices.
You can also check or find a Valuation Number for your property by using the Property Location Browser and following these steps:
- Enter your Location Address in ‘Search for address or location’ and select the matched address from the list.
- Zoom into your property by clicking on the '+' button at the top right of the screen, or by using your mouse to scroll up.
- Click on the marker icon which is on your property and then the 'Select' button in the Toolbox pop-up. Your Valuation Number will be listed in the last column of the table that opens up below.
If you already know the Valuation Number, you can see where your property is by:
- clicking on the 'Find' icon
- selecting 'Parcels', then 'Valuation Number'
- entering your Valuation Number
- clicking on 'View new results'
- zooming out by clicking on the '–' button at the top right of the screen, or by using your mouse to scroll down.
Valuation Number rules
Producer PICs – for livestock
- At least 1 Valuation Number must be in the PIC Zone specified by the first 2 digits of your PIC.
- If your property includes a Valuation Number on Kangaroo Island, then all of your Valuation Numbers must be on Kangaroo Island.
- If you have Valuation Numbers on both sides of the Gulf of St. Vincent or Spencer Gulf, then they can only be included on the same PIC if they are in the PIC Zones immediately adjacent to the top of the Gulf.
- If you have at least 1 Valuation Number in the Hundreds region of SA, then all Valuation Numbers must be within 100 km of each other, as measured from the centre (centroid) of each Valuation Number.
- If all of your Valuation Numbers are in far north regional SA (in the Out of Hundreds region), the distance between the closest boundary of a Valuation Number to that of its nearest neighbouring Valuation Number must be within 100 km.
Non-producer PICs – for abattoirs, saleyards and showgrounds
- If you have at least 1 Valuation Number in the Hundreds region of SA, then all Valuations must be within 5 km of each other, as measured from the centre (centroid) of each Valuation Number.
- If all of your Valuation Numbers are in far north regional SA (in the Out of Hundreds region), the distance between the closest boundary of a Valuation Number to that of its nearest neighbouring Valuation Number must be within 5 km.
Distance measured between Valuation Numbers
SA consists of 2 regions:
- the Hundreds region
- the Out of Hundreds region (far north regional SA).
The region of a Valuation Number is determined by the centre location of the Valuation Number. The centre (technical term being the ‘centroid’) is calculated using a spatial formula.
If you have at least 1 Valuation Number within the Hundreds region of SA, then the distance is measured from the centroid of each Valuation Number.
If all your Valuation Numbers are in far north regional SA (in the Out of Hundreds region), then the distance is measured from the closest boundary of a Valuation Number to that of its nearest neighbouring Valuation Number.
If you have Valuation Numbers in both the Hundreds region and Out of Hundreds region, then the distance is measured from the centroid of each Valuation Number, not from the closest boundaries.
