Help protect SA’s abalone industry this long weekend

Friday 8 March 2024

Travellers heading to the South East this long weekend are encouraged to inform themselves on the Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) restrictions before hitting the water.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) asks anyone heading to the coast, between the South Australian and Victorian border up to the Murray Mouth, to check the AVG restrictions before enjoying a weekend on the bay.

In response to AVG detected in wild abalone at Port MacDonnell, a Control Area from the South Australian–Victorian border to Southend, with a Buffer Zone to Murray Mouth, has been put in place until 27 March 2024.

To limit the spread while surveillance efforts are underway, restrictions to aquatic activities are in place in both the Control Area and Buffer Zone.

Activities such as walking, swimming, surfing or kayaking are not impacted. However, it is recommended any recreational equipment, such as wetsuits or kayaks, are thoroughly cleaned and washed after use.

Fishing and boating are allowed in both the Control Area and Buffer Zone. However, there are restrictions that people need to be aware of for:

  • reef diving
  • use of catch
  • equipment cleaning
  • use of anchors.

The highest risk of AVG spread is through human activity with the movement of offal, shells or mucus, the primary carriers of the virus.

PIRSA's current Incident Controller (IC) of the AVG response, Peter Appleford, encourages anyone spending time on the South East coast this long weekend to consider the restrictions before heading into the water.

'Decontamination is key when stopping the spread of AVG,' Prof Appleford said.

'Everyone within the Control Area and Buffer Zone can help protect the abalone industry by following the restrictions and cleaning their equipment after use. These simple steps will go a long way in reducing the risk of spreading AVG.'

Play your part to protect our marine life and fishing industries – follow the restrictions and keep your marine equipment clean.
