Queensland fruit fly outbreak declared in Cadell

Friday 17 March 2023

A new Queensland fruit fly outbreak has been declared in Cadell after maggots were found in peaches grown at a commercial property.

The maggots were discovered after a member of public reported suspect fruit fly to the Fruit Fly Hotline.

Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) staff will be visiting all properties within the new 1.5 km red outbreak area to inspect yards, apply organic bait and provide residents with information about what they need to do.

PIRSA General Manager of the Fruit Fly Response Nick Secomb said restrictions are now in place for growers and residents within the Cadell outbreak area.

"Residents must keep home-grown fruit on their property and growers must ensure all host fruit is treated and certified before leaving the Cadell outbreak area," said Mr Secomb.

"Search your address on the fruit fly interactive map at fruitfly.sa.gov.au to see how fruit and vegetable movement restrictions affect you, depending where you live, travel, work or go to school.

"We are now aware fruit fly is active in Cadell and it is vital everyone in that region does everything they can to remove opportunities for fruit fly to breed.

"Pick your ripe fruit now. Collect any fallen fruit, double bag it and call the Fruit Fly Hotline to arrange collection. Check for signs of fruit fly by cutting your fruit open. If you see anything wiggling, seal the fruit in an airtight bag and call the Fruit Fly Hotline on 1300 666 010."

Chair of the Riverland Fruit Fly Committee and local grower Jason Size encourages Cadell growers to apply for PIRSA's self-baiting program to protect their crops and the region.

"Commercial growers in red outbreak areas are eligible for free fruit fly bait and lures that attract and kill fruit fly," said Mr Size.

"I strongly encourage Cadell growers to access these resources provided by PIRSA. Information about self-baiting can be found on the fruit fly website.

"There is lots of useful information for growers in red outbreak areas about the restrictions now in place and what you need to do."

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start, contact a Family and Business Support (FaBS) mentor. It is a free informal, confidential and independent conversation with a local Riverland mentor – by phone or in person.

Growers can learn more at Family and Business mentors or call a Riverland FaB directly: Robyn Cain 0411 633 085; John Chase 0419 848 672; Brent Fletcher 0439 409 430.
