Australian Razorfish Pty Ltd

Consultation closed on 5 October 2023.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) is seeking written submissions on the below application received from Australian Razorfish Pty Ltd to vary (movement) an aquaculture Pilot Lease and associated Licence under the Aquaculture Act 2001.

A draft licence certificate containing draft conditions can be found on the aquaculture public register by searching the licence number (AQ00453) and clicking on the licence document link. Note these conditions are draft only and may be subject to change.

Also see information regarding marine licence holder responsibilities.

Location

The aquaculture activity is proposed to be undertaken within the waters of Smoky Bay, 2.7 km northwest of the township of Smoky Bay, South Australia.

Essentially the proposal is to flip the northern end of the site to be in deeper water. The substituted area (in yellow) would result in 4.8 hectares (approximately 58%) of the original leased area being moved slightly westwards, while 3.5 hectares would remain in its current location.

Species and farming structures

The licence holder is authorised to farm Razorfish (Pinna bicolor) using BST contained longlines and direct seeding into the seafloor by hand. The proposal to move does not propose any new species or farming structures.

Assessment

PIRSA's licence assessment process includes the completion of an Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) risk assessment, which is based on a National ESD Framework underpinned by the Australia and New Zealand Standard for risk management.

During this assessment, up to 36 risk events (depending on the application) at both site and regional scales are assessed against the likelihood of an event, and the consequence of such an event. This results in an overall risk rating and an understanding of the potential impact of the proposed activity.

Feedback received through written submissions is considered as part of the application assessment.
