The first research results from the Trees on Farm initiative will be presented today at the program’s inaugural seminar, providing additional information for farmers and landowners who may consider exploring farm forestry.
The seminar, jointly hosted by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) and Primary Producers SA features results from five research projects.
These projects, covering topics such as plantation models, forestry-based carbon farming, planning, and tax considerations, will help landowners make decisions on plantation establishment and carbon farming opportunities.
Launched in March 2022, the Trees on Farm initiative is aimed at growing and developing the on-farm forest plantation sector, particularly in the Green Triangle region. Key components of the program are being delivered in partnership with the Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub (GTFIH).
These latest research outcomes will also assist PIRSA to further understand the barriers to farm tree plantations to support activities that better target interested producers.
The Trees on Farm initiative, jointly funded by both the Australian and South Australian Governments, has the potential to play a leading role in growing new plantations that will not only help secure Australia’s future wood supply, but it will also deliver significant carbon benefits to farmers and the State as well as provide income and environmental benefits for landholders and the wider community.
