PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture has closed Goolwa Beach to recreational fishing of bivalve molluscs, including Pipi (Goolwa Cockle), until further notice as a precautionary measure following the detection of E.coli in Pipis above what is safe for human consumption.
The closure, which is effective immediately, follows the testing of Pipi samples adjacent to the Murray Mouth by the South Australian Shellfish Quality Assurance Program (SASQAP), which indicates levels of E. coli in Pipis above what is considered safe for human consumption.
Further ongoing testing of the area will be conducted by PIRSA and the closure will remain in place until results indicate Pipi are safe for human consumption.
The closure includes the entire Goolwa Beach from the Murray Mouth to Middleton Point near Mill Terrace at Middleton.
