Three point linkage disc used for contour furrowing, July 1964

This is a three-point linkage disc plough used for constructing contour furrows in both pastoral and agricultural districts in the 1950s and 1960s. It is possibly an International GL90 machine.

The sloping wheel at the rear ran in the furrows and helped the plough run true behind the tractor. The bar next to the disc prevented the build up of clay on the disc.

Contour furrows were ploughed along a surveyed level line and trapped water and seeds, providing a favourable environment for the germination and growth of plants which in turn protect the soil from wind and water erosion. Much degraded land was reclaimed in this way.

The Soil Conservation Branch hired the ploughs to farmers for two shillings a working day.
