A crop harvester direct heading lucerne for seed circa 1950

Direct heading is the simplest method of harvesting lucerne for seed. It is best suited to dryland grown crops, especially in drier and hotter areas, mainly because these mature crops dry off and ripen with a minimum of green material. Mowing, windrowing, allowing to dry and picking up with the harvester may be a better method in dense, irrigated crops especially in wetter, cooler areas.
