Registering and marking your gear

To use permitted fishing gear, you need to mark each device per the below requirements. Some specified gear also needs to be registered and renewed each year.

Register your gear

You must apply to register all recreational mesh nets and rock lobster pots before use.

Mark your gear

All fishing gear left unattended must be appropriately tagged. Some gear must also be marked with a buoy.

Tag requirements

All tags must:

  • be 10 cm by 5 cm in size
  • be durable and non-corrodible in water
  • clearly display the marks required by regulations, in letters and figures of at least 20 mm in height.

Buoy requirements

Buoys must float on the surface of the water and:

  • be the correct colour for the device it is attached to
  • be made of material that is durable in water
  • clearly display the marks required by regulations, in letters and figures of no less than 70 mm in height
  • have a volume no less than:
    • 2 litres with a 15 to 20 cm diameter in all inland waters
    • 4 litres with a 20 cm diameter in marine waters.

Fishing gear needs to be marked as follows.

Registered fishing gear

Mesh nets must be marked with a tag that shows the:

  • registered owner’s name
  • registration number.

Rock lobster pots only need to display the registration number on tags.

Other fishing gear

The following fishing gear must be marked with a buoy if set away from the shore:

A tag is required whether set from the shore or away from the shore if the person responsible is not in attendance of the device at all times.
