Top three summer fishing tips

Summer holidays are a busy time in and on the water. To help get you prepare before you head out on the water this summer, we've highlighted the top three fishing rules to keep in mind.

  1. Stick to the limits – Check the legal size, bag and boat limits for all species, the locations of fishing closures and aquatic reserves and you have the correct gear before heading out. If you have reached the daily bag or boat limit for one species, then try your hand at another – it is all part of ensuring a fair days fishing for all.
  2. Properly handle fish you are returning to the water – Taking the time to properly handle your catch to give it the best chance of survival on return to the water ensures the ethical treatment of animals.
  3. Report illegal fishing to Fishwatch – If you see someone doing the wrong thing – such as poaching, illegal netting, use of illegal devices or exceeding limits – then phone the free 24-hour Fishwatch hotline on 1800 065 522 or report it through the free SA Recreational Fishing Guide app.

PIRSA Fisheries Officers and Fishcare Volunteers will be out in force this summer period, patrolling popular fishing areas and hotspots. So if you're unsure, approach them or go to  www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing

Enjoy your fishing this summer, and continue to adhere to the rules to help preserve our fish stocks!
