Projects in progress

The Local Economic Recovery (LER) Program was set up to boost the local economies most severely affected by the 2019–20 bushfires. It provides funding to communities and primary industries at Cudlee Creek and on Kangaroo Island.

Cudlee Creek Weeds After Fire Project

The weeds after fire project helped landholders reduce the risk of weed invasion by identifying and eradicating new high-risk weeds on their property.

Through a free site visit, the program assisted landholders in the 2019–20 Cudlee Creek fire scar with:

  • surveillance for new, high risk weeds and identification of suspected weeds on your property
  • information about risk management and prioritising control targets
  • connecting landholders to weed control programs.

Apple Grower Recovery Grants

The Apple Grower Recovery Grants were made available to all apple growers directly impacted by the 2019–20 bushfires in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island.

Funding could be used for rejuvenation and replanting activities that help fast-track the recovery of orchards.

Bushfire Resilience Agriculture and Land Management Courses

Bushfire Resilience Agriculture and Land Management Courses aim to create stronger, smarter, and more connected communities.

This project is being delivered in partnership with

  • Country Fire Service
  • Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board.

Courses consisted of 4 sessions to be delivered by December 2022.

Horticulture Rebuild and Recovery Grant for cherry and olive growers

The Horticulture Rebuild and Recovery Grant for cherry and olive growers was made available to all growers directly impacted by the 2019–20 bushfires in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island.

Funding could be used for rejuvenation and replanting activities that help fast-track the recovery of orchards and groves.

Kangaroo Island blue gum plantation clean up subsidy

The Kangaroo Island Blue Gum plantation clean up and return to agriculture subsidy was made available to to support bushfire impacted primary producers clean up burnt blue gum plantations and return the area to agriculture.

Funding of up to $1,000 per hectare and up to $200,000 per applicant was made available to eligible applicants. Funding could be used for felling, removal of timber, control of blue gum wildling and activities that enable the area to be converted to agriculture.

Kangaroo Island Farm Business Management Project

The Kangaroo Island Farm Business Management Project supports producers to better understand their farming business and connect them with providers to enhance future business capability.

The project provides subsided mentoring and training in:

  • farm business planning
  • risk management
  • natural resource management
  • personal and social resilience.

This project is now in progress with training continuing with registered participants throughout 2022.

Kangaroo Island blue gum wilding control

Blue gum wildling seedlings are considered the largest post fire weed issue on Kangaroo Island. This funding will enable control of wildlings with a particular focus on:

  • areas where infestations are most established, dense
  • in remote and hard to access areas of the Island
  • in areas of native vegetation including some areas containing high value and threatened species

Pasture recovery in Cudlee Creek

This project provided bushfire impacted landholders with an opportunity to enhance your understanding of measuring the quality and quantity of pastures and identify what you need to do to undertake pasture renovation or rejuvenation.

This project is being delivered in partnership with the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board.

Vineyard Business Resilience Project

This project supports businesses in the viticulture industry to build industry resilience by providing opportunities to enhance existing knowledge and skills.

This project is being delivered in partnership with the Adelaide Hills Wine Region.

Vineyard fire recovery case studies

These case studies will address knowledge gaps in understanding best practice pruning methods for grape growers to return to full production as quickly as possible following a bushfire.

This project is being delivered in partnership with Wine Australia.

Viticulture Rebuild and Recovery Grant

The Viticulture Rebuild and Recovery Grant was made available to all vineyard owners directly impacted by the 2019–20 bushfires in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island.

Funding could be used for rejuvenation and replanting activities that help fast-track the recovery of vineyards.
