Reducing grazing pressure through kangaroo management

Kangaroo numbers can place additional grazing pressure on crops, pastures and native vegetation during dry seasons.

PIRSA leads this project in partnership with Landscape Boards, Department for Environment and Water (DEW) and industry stakeholders.

The project includes:

  • Field Processor Grant – for existing and new field processors to assist with operating costs (now closed)
  • Field Processor Incentive – financial incentives for field processors to remove kangaroos and commercially harvest others
  • Primary Producer Incentive – financial incentives for primary producers to remove kangaroos
  • PIRSA staff connecting field processors with landholders impacted by large numbers of kangaroos.

Field processor incentives

The program began 22 May 2025 and will run until funding is exhausted.

Only registered South Australian field processors can access financial incentives.

Any South Australian can undertake training and apply for field processor accreditation and permits to benefit from these financial incentives – see Kangaroo industry permits.

Across South Australia, PIRSA will pay:

  • $5 financial incentive for each humanely shot commercially harvested kangaroo
  • $7 financial incentive for each humanely shot kangaroo that is not commercially harvested.

In addition, field processors will receive a daily incentive to commercially and non-commercially harvest kangaroos in places where the numbers harvested are typically far below the commercial quota.

For more details, refer to the Field Harvester Incentives Guidelines ( PDF 238.0 KB ).

Primary producer incentives

This program will run until funding is exhausted.

South Australian primary producers can apply for $7 financial incentive for each humanely shot kangaroo, provided that at least 100 kangaroos are removed – the minimum invoice that can be submitted to PIRSA is $700.

You must have the appropriate permit or multiple permits from the Department of Environment and Water for a minimum of 100 kangaroos.

You can apply for destroy wildlife permits on the Department of Environment and Water’s website.

Shooting must comply with codes of practice for the humane destruction of wildlife.

To apply for the incentive:

Email both forms and a copy of your Permit to Destroy Wildlife to: pirsa.kangaroodroughtproject@sa.gov.au.
