Alligator gar
Freshwater species not currently found in South Australia.
Alligator Gar is a large freshwater species that can grow to more than 1.5m long. It has the potential to prey on most native fish species.
Declared noxious under the Fisheries Management Act 2007. Noxious species are a severe threat to the natural environment and industries. They cannot be held or traded in South Australia without specific authorisation and must not be returned to the water if caught.
What to look for:
- large species up to 1.8m in length
- garfish appearance (hence the name)
- large teeth visible along snout
- short broad snout
- usually brown to lighter grey.
