Snapper stock assessment report 2022 livestream

Wednesday 16 November 2022

People who are keen to understand the research behind a recently released report on snapper numbers in South Australia will be able to hear live from a South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) scientist in an online presentation.

SARDI Research Director Aquatic Sciences Dr Mike Steer will present and discuss the results of the Snapper Stock Assessment Report 2022 this Friday 18 November, at 5pm.

The report provides an updated assessment of the status of South Australia’s snapper stocks. The information session will be livestreamed so people can join from anywhere.

The Snapper Stock Assessment Report 2022 has shown an arrest in the decline of the fishable biomass; however, stocks remain classified as depleted in both the Spencer Gulf / West Coast zone and Gulf St Vincent Zone.

The South East fishing zone, where Snapper stocks are shared with Western Victoria, continues to be classified as sustainable.

Following the release of The Snapper Stock Assessment Report 2022, the results are being considered by the Marine Scalefish Fishery Management Advisory Committee and its scientific sub-committee. The MSFMAC will provide recommendations to government, with a decision expected in December.

The livestream follows a series of information sessions around the state, at Whyalla, Wallaroo, Adelaide, Victor Harbor, Ceduna, and Port Lincoln.

The livestreamed information session will also be recorded and available to rewatch on the PIRSA website.

To join the webinar, download the report and for further information on the current management arrangements for snapper, go to Snapper fishery research findings.
