New Waikerie fruit fly outbreak declared

Wednesday 1 February 2023

A new Queensland fruit fly outbreak has been declared in Waikerie, called Waikerie B, after maggots were found in commercially grown apricots.

Growers and residents are urged to search their address on the outbreak map to understand the restrictions now in place within the new 1.5 km red outbreak and 15 km yellow suspension area.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) General Manager of the Fruit Fly Response Nick Secomb said PIRSA fruit fly officers will be visiting properties in the outbreak area to provide further advice, as well as apply bait and check for signs of fruit fly in fruit.

"The number of fruit flies and maggots being found in the Riverland at the moment is of concern and now more than ever it is crucial that people follow restrictions and do not move locally grown fruit from properties in red outbreak areas," said Mr Secomb.

"Fruit fly is a posing a real risk to locally grown fruit – both commercially and in your backyard. Riverland growers and residents, please follow the fruit movement restrictions in the affected fruit fly areas.

"Growers in red outbreak areas are required to treat fruit susceptible to fruit fly and obtain approvals from PIRSA market access staff before moving it out of an outbreak area.

"We’re lucky maggots at this property were found before they became breeding flies. PIRSA fruit fly officers are now visiting the property and will be able to eradicate the hot spot.

"Please give fruit fly officers access to your property so they can do their work quickly and efficiently. Special waste arrangements are in place so please check the waste advice on the fruit fly website or call the Fruit Fly Hotline."

Chair of the Riverland Fruit Fly Committee and local grower Jason Size said that everyone needs to play their part to prevent fruit fly from spreading.

"I urge growers as well as residents, particularly those in or near fruit fly affected areas, to follow fruit fly prevention actions and call 1300 666 010 if you suspect fruit fly. Pick ripe fruit, collect or treat fallen fruit, and prevent opportunities for fruit fly to breed on your block or in your backyard," said Mr Size.

"If you’re a grower now in a red outbreak area, I encourage you to contact PIRSA to register your interest in the self-baiting program, to protect your crops and support with eradication."

Primary producers impacted by current fruit fly outbreaks or flood are encouraged to contact the free Family and business (FaB) mentors or call a Riverland FaB directly: Robyn Cain 0411 633 085; John Chase 0419 848 672; Brent Fletcher 0439 409 430.
