Northfield Research Centre

The Department of Agriculture’s Northfield Laboratories and Research Centre was a hive of research and development activity for three decades from its opening in 1964. Indeed, well ahead of the trends towards decentralisation from the capital city and regionalisation across the State, at one time the site was mooted as a possible Departmental headquarters. This option was not pursued and in the event the site was turned over to housing and the Northfield operations were downscaled and moved to the Waite precinct at Urrbrae. The rise and fall of the Northfield Laboratories and Research Centre are told, in part, by the documents below and in other material in this section.

Further contributions to the history of the Northfield Laboratories and Research Centre are invited.
