The South Australian Wine Industry Council (SAWIC) was established in January 2003 as a collaborative partnership between the wine industry and the Government of South Australia to enable discussion of issues that are of significance for the future development of the wine industry.
The Hon Rory McEwen MP, Minister for Agriculture, Food & Fisheries, chairs the Council and Ms Dianne Davidson is the Co-Chair. The 25 member Council is comprised of a number of Senior Government Ministers together with leaders from all sectors of the wine industry, who meet at least four times a year.

Terms of Reference
The Terms of Reference for the Council are:
- To provide a forum for discussion and feedback on issues which are important to maintaining South Australia’s pre-eminent position in the wine industry and to the future development of the wine industry in South Australia, particularly through export market growth, and develop appropriate strategies for Government and/or industry action.
- To develop and maintain a strategic partnership between the wine industry and the Government that addresses both the industry’s and Government’s strategic plans.
- To review the impact of various government policies and activities on the wine industry and provide advice to the Government as appropriate.
- To review existing and help formulate new Government initiatives to assist the development of the South Australian wine industry and to recommend new approaches or changes as appropriate.
- To consider opportunities for improved collaboration between individual Government agencies and between the Government and industry that would benefit the growth of the wine industry, eg collaborative marketing initiatives.
- To consider future infrastructure requirements of the wine industry and develop appropriate industry and/or Government strategies to ensure its cost effective provision.
- To consider potential synergies between the wine, food and tourism industries in South Australia, so as to identify collaborative approaches for their future growth.
- To report to the South Australian Government on key issues affecting the wine industry at a national level so that coordinated action can be discussed and to enable the State Government to input into policy deliberations at the Commonwealth level.
- To consider other matters as appropriate at the request of the Government and/or industry.
