The Wine ScoreCard is a tool, developed by PIRSA, that evaluates the contribution made by the wine industry to South Australia's economy from production to consumption. This economic analysis enables us to estimate the value of production; imports; inter-State trade and changes to stocks; retail sales; and the contribution made by the hospitality sector. Wine Market Development Program

Home

The agriculture, food and wine industries make an important contribution to South Australia’s economy, generating about $15.5 billion in annual revenue or 11 per cent of Gross State Product. Wine currently contributes around $1.7 billion revenue to the State's economy.

The Grape and Wine Group in Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) has a whole of through chain responsibility for the grape and wine industry, with an industry development role in all facets of the industry - from grape growing to marketing.

It has responsibility for policy advice on legislation that impacts on the wine industry:

  • Wine Grapes Industry Act 1991
  • Phylloxera and Grape Industry Act 1998

It also administers the Wine Industry Funds established under the Primary Industry Funding Schemes Act 1998.

The Group takes the lead role in developing directions, policy advice, collaborative infrastructure, and programs to implement the priorities mapped out in Wine: A Partnership 2010-2015 (PDF 1.4 MB). This involves providing leadership across PIRSA and policy input into other South Australian government agencies, and working closely with the wine industry at the sector level.

The wine industry works in a collaborative partnership with the South Australian government through the South Australian Wine Industry Council (SAWIC). PIRSA provides expert executive services to the Council, its Task Groups and Issues Group and develops and strengthens the collaborative infrastructure within the State.
