Most water resources in the Mount Lofty Ranges are prescribed and either have a Water Allocation Plan or are in the process of developing one. The catchment's water resources are vital to the region's lifestyle and prosperity. In recent years, increasing development has put pressure on the available water.
Areas with a Water Allocation Plan include Clare, Barossa, Angus Bremer, Northern Adelaide Plains and McLaren Vale. Those in the process of developing Water Allocation Plans include the reminder of the eastern and western Mount Lofty Ranges. These are expected to be completed in 2008.
Irrigation in the Mount Lofty Ranges relies on a combination of surface water, ground water, imported water and watercourse. There may be established water markets in some regions of the Mount Lofty Ranges, but not all. Developers will need to check water-trading conditions with the Water Allocation Plan for their region. Local brokers may be able to assist.
