Water considerations

The Limestone Coast is the major groundwater province in South Australia, with general availability of large supplies of relatively good quality groundwater. Groundwater resources in the region are contained within two regionally extensive aquifer systems, an upper, unconfined aquifer and a deeper confined aquifer.

The geology of the region has had a strong influence on the quality, quantity and features of the groundwater and surface water resources found within the Limestone Coast. The unconfined aquifer is the principal source of groundwater for the Limestone Coast, and is used for municipal supplies for towns, stock and domestic water, industrial use, and widespread irrigation. The salinity of the unconfined aquifer varies significantly over the region, but generally concentrations of salt show a natural increase toward the north and west of the region. Groundwater from the deeper confined aquifer is utilised mainly by the agricultural industry and for municipal water supplies.

The Limestone Coast relies heavily on its unique ground water resources and protection and enhancement are vital in securing the longevity of these precious natural resources. Regulation of groundwater has been pro-actively introduced since the 1970's to manage groundwater depletion and quality deterioration. There are four Prescribed Wells Areas in the region: Lower Limestone Coast, Padthaway, Tatiara, and Tintinara Coonalpyn.

The surface water resources of the region are characterised by four ephemeral streams with their catchments originating in Victoria. The use of surface water for agricultural purposes is low due to the widespread availability of good quality groundwater. Morambro Creek is the region's only prescribed surface water resource.
