This a national project, directed by the Primary Industry Ministerial Council, with investment and support from six state Primary Industry Departments, two federal government agencies (Department of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries and CSIRO) and MLA (Meat and Livestock Australia). Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) is leading the project on behalf of the investors.
The aim of the project is to evaluate whether productivity improvements can be made by improving systems, from production through to the final consumer, using a value chain approach. The evaluation is being conducted by an expert group (made up of value chain experts, industry and government representatives) reviewing real time case studies of lamb value chains.
Four case studies, of domestic and international retail and food service chains, will be conducted. An export retail chain case study is already underway; from consumers who purchase Australian lamb from Walmart in California through to farmers who produce lamb for the CRF “Lamb about Town” range.
