Aquaculture industry performing strongly

29 July 2010

South Australia's aquaculture industry experienced strong jobs growth in 2008-09.

Production and farm-gate value increased in most sectors of the industry, highlighted by a 65 per cent rise in marine finfish value to $29.2 million.

Fisheries Minister Michael O'Brien says the report confirmed the industry is a valuable contributor to the State's economy and food security.

"South Australia's aquaculture industry continues to show resilience during a difficult business environment, accounting for approximately $246 million in farm-gate sales and more than half the State's total seafood production in 2008-09," Mr O'Brien says.

"Tuna remains the single largest market, leading with 64 per cent share of output valued at approximately $158 million, followed by oysters and marine finfish at 25 per cent, with a combined value of almost $62 million.

"The report shows the important contribution aquaculture is making towards South Australia's growth and prosperity."

Mr O'Brien says he is pleased to note that 64 per cent of the industry's employment was based in regional areas.

"The jobs growth figure of 14.1 per cent is a fantastic success story for South Australia," he says.

"The aquaculture industry supports business activity, adds to household income and provides regional employment opportunities.'

Most seafood production from the South Australian aquaculture industry is concentrated on Eyre Peninsula.
