23 June 2009
The South Australian Government has allocated $1 million to the Whyalla City Council for the development of an industrial park on 140 hectares of formerly vacant land.
Regional Development Minister Paul Caica says the grant will contribute to the park's electricity infrastructure costs.
Total infrastructure costs for the park are estimated at $11.5 million, of which the electricity component is estimated at $3.95 million.
Mr Caica says the Whyalla Industrial Park - located next to the Port Augusta to Whyalla road and the rail line to Whyalla - will provide significant regional benefits, particularly with its proximity to mine sites, transport infrastructure and local businesses.
Potential users of the park include companies servicing or supplying mining operations such as Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and One Steel.
Mr Caica says the latest Regional Development Infrastructure Fund contribution adds to the $500,000 the government provided to the park for internal roads, stormwater management and water supply in 2007.
