19 May 2011
The State Government has allocated $1.022 million grant from the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund to an upgrade of the Port Lincoln Airport.
Regional Development Minister Gail Gago said the project would deliver significant social and economic benefits to Eyre Peninsula.
“Port Lincoln is South Australia’s busiest regional airport, carrying more than 4000 passengers a week on the Adelaide route,” the Minister said.
“The airport services regular passenger flights, charters, medical transport and general aviation.
"The grant will assist with transport and electricity infrastructure at the airport in particular, in construction of the new taxiway and extension of the apron, and connection of mains electricity to a proposed new terminal."
The upgraded facility will help give Port Lincoln maximum flexibility to accommodate different-sized aircraft.
The infrastructure improvements are part of a major airport upgrade, which will also include a new modern terminal building, roads and a car park.
The project also aims to create a fresh image for travellers coming to Eyre Peninsula and Port Lincoln, providing a significant boost to the local tourism industry.
