The South Australian Government will provide up to $500,000 through its Regional Development Infrastructure Fund (RDIF) towards the upgrade of Mount Gambier Airport.
Regional Development Minister Gail Gago says the money will help the District Council of Grant implement its 15-year airport redevelopment plan.
"This funding will support runway lighting, also strengthening of the main runway, apron and
taxiways," the Minister says.
"The total cost of the project is $3.2 million.
"The runway upgrade will assist the operations of Rex Airlines and charter aircraft, and may help attract a second carrier to the region.
"The project will boost local employment during the construction phase and afterwards through increased tourism and enhanced transport services."
The District Council of Grant has welcomed the State Government's support for the airport
upgrade.
Mayor Richard Sage says: "Council appreciates the funding, which will help in upgrading the airport for the benefit of tourism and business throughout the Limestone Coast and Western Victoria."
Mayor Sage says the project will begin shortly and be finished by the end of this financial year.
Ms Gago says the RDIF plays an important role in the implementation of South Australia's Strategic Plan by helping to meet a number of targets for regional jobs, investment and export earnings.
