17 June 2010
An historic council boundary change at Mount Gambier has been approved by the Minister for State/Local Government Relations, Gail Gago.
The boundary shift will mean 695 hectares, which were part of the District Council of Grant, are now part of the City of Mount Gambier, expanding its scope by about 25 per cent.
The announcement follows comprehensive community consultation by both councils.
"The have carefully considered their plans for future growth and made a strategic decision to change their boundaries, so Mount Gambier can expand in accordance with the Greater Mount Gambier Master Plan," Minister Gago says.
The change will see the Mount Gambier TAFE/University of South Australia Campus, Bunnings, associated commercial and bulky goods developments, Calula Residential Estate, a golf course and large areas of land set aside for urban residential development, fall within the City of Mount Gambier.
"These south east councils are experiencing population growth and this change, involving 270 properties on land allocated for residential, commercial, industrial and production use, will help to ensure the effective use of council resources.
"Acting now also provides for the orderly growth of Mount Gambier and its surrounds as a vibrant regional city, while ensuring the rural character of the District Council of Grant can be maintained," Ms Gago says.
The councils applied to the Boundary Adjustment Facilitation Panel, a statutory State Government authority, to transfer five parcels of land from the District Council of Grant to the City of Mount Gambier.
The new boundary recognises community links to each council, in the area affected by the boundary change.
