Media Release | 16 January 2008
A luxury cruise ship will visit ports around South Australia over the coming days, bringing visitors from around Australia and the world to enjoy regional tourism attractions.
North Star Cruises' "Southern Safari" cruise leaves Glenelg tomorrow, and will cruise around the Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula before arriving at Ceduna on 25 January.
This is the first time the cruise company, which specialises in luxury wilderness cruises, has visited South Australia, after adding the "Southern Safari" to its itinerary last year.
South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive Andrew McEvoy says the new cruise aboard the True North ship shows how the South Australian tourism experience can combine luxury and nature to attract the important high-yield interstate and international visitors.
"Unspoilt wilderness and unique coastal experiences are two of South Australia's key strengths as a tourism destination, but many visitors don't want to have to "rough it" to experience them," Mr McEvoy says.
"The $55 million Port Lincoln Hotel, officially opening this month, is another example of the attraction of luxury accommodation and fine dining coupled with a destination where wilderness and coastal experiences are readily accessible.
"Then there's Southern Ocean Lodge, due to open in March on Kangaroo Island, which will be Australia's premier example of a luxury eco-retreat."
