Regions benefit through Budget funding

Media Release | 14 July 2008

The South Australian Government's continued support for regional South Australia has been underlined in the State Budget, with more than $200 million provided for new initiatives.

Treasurer Kevin Foley says the regions are home to 295,000 people and play a vital role in the State's overall economic performance - but that because of the severe, prolonged drought many areas have been suffering hardship.

"For broader economic prosperity to be guaranteed we need to ensure that rural communities remain sustainable," Mr Foley says.

"They're the engine room for our exports and helping them to remain sustainable is part of ensuring they have a bright economic future.

"This year's Budget includes a significant investment to upgrade the State's rural roads, including the freight transport network."

The regions also will benefit from the delivery of recently approved Regional Development Infrastructure Fund grants totalling more than $1.2 million.

Regional Development Minister Karlene Maywald says the grants include:

  • $500,000 for a sustainable project through which effluent will supply mining and horticultural activities in the Adelaide Hills

  • $485,000 to upgrade Clean Seas Tuna's electricity infrastructure so it can expand its breeding operations

  • $150,000 to upgrade the Jamestown Industrial Park's power supply.
