Mid North industrial park power grant

Media Release | 14 May 2008

Minister for Regional Development Karlene Maywald has awarded a $150,000 grant to the Northern Areas Council to upgrade power supply to Jamestown Industrial Park.

"The grant, from the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund, for the park will support a range of industries, including a major investment surge in wind farms in the Mid North area," she says.

"The council is working with Suzlon Energy Australia, an international firm specialising in the construction, supply and long-term maintenance of wind farm energy facilities.

"Suzlon plans to establish a regional centre, operations office and stores facilities in Jamestown at a cost of more than $2.5 million.

"The regional centre will support the construction of three wind farms in the Mid North and northern Yorke Peninsula over the next 12 months. They are expected to have an operating life of 25 years.

"The Suzlon investment will boost employment from seven full-time employees in 2008-09 to 27 in 2012-13.

"Another company to benefit from the electricity upgrade to the industrial park is David Thiselton Pty Ltd, which will now set up a cold storage facility worth $300,000, creating three full-time jobs.

"The upgrade will also attract other manufacturing businesses to the industrial park, increasing investment and jobs in the region."

Minister Maywald says the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund increases investment in strategic areas of regional infrastructure that support job creation, investment, exports and economic growth.

"Funding for infrastructure projects, such as the Jamestown Industrial Park, have a tangible effect on regional economies, particularly in terms of output and jobs," she says.

Since 2002, more than $18 million in RDIF money has supported projects that have contributed an estimated $680 million in total investment to the State and created an estimated 2,700 jobs.
