Local egg business expansion supported

Media Release | 14 May 2008

Mid North producer Days Eggs will receive an $80,000 State Government grant from the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund to facilitate its business expansion.

Minister for Regional Development Karlene Maywald says the money will contribute to an upgrade of electricity supply to support the expansion of the company's two sites at Port Pirie and Two Wells.

"Days Eggs plan to double its current production levels with two new sheds to 1.5 million eggs per week," she says.

"This will mean expanding its workforce by 18 to 49 full-time, part-time and casual employees, which is a great outcome for the local community.

"Days Eggs currently employs 31 people and provides a high volume caged eggs to the State.

"The development will also reduce the reliance by South Australian retailers on eggs brought in from interstate.

"At the moment South Australia imports more than 50% of its eggs for our major supermarkets."

Minister Maywald says the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund increases investment in strategic areas of regional infrastructure that support job creation, investment, exports and economic growth.

"Funding for infrastructure projects, such as the Day Eggs expansion, have a tangible effect on regional economies, particularly in terms of output and jobs," she says.

Since 2002, more than $18 million in RDIF money has supported projects that have contributed an estimated $680 million in total investment to the State and created an estimated 2,700 jobs.
