New bronze look for iconic Angaston statue

Media Release | 14 February 2008

The Barossa Valley town of Angaston is to have its iconic farmer and plough-horse statue re-cast in bronze under a partnership between the State Government and the local community.

Minister for Regional Development Karlene Maywald says the Government will contribute $60,000 from the Rural Town Development Fund toward the project.

The fibreglass statue, titled 'Day Off, Peter', was erected in the Angaston Memorial Reserve in 1988.

'The statue has been damaged by vandalism in the past so recasting it in bronze will help preserve it for generations to come," Minister Maywald says.

"The Government's contribution will be matched by funds from the local community. The Angaston Agricultural Bureau initiated a fundraising campaign and the Barossa Council has committed $10,000.

"This project was supported because of the statue's iconic status for Angaston and the Barossa region, which attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year.
