Media Release | 14 February 2008
South Australia's Minister for Regional Development Karlene Maywald today congratulated the Tatiara Council on receiving a $440,000 State Government grant to create a cultural and civic centre in Bordertown.
The grant, made available through the government's Rural Town Development Fund, will be used as part of a $3.7 million project in the town.
"The money will be spent to assist the development of a cultural and civic precinct that includes the town library, gallery and performance hall," Minister Maywald says.
"The library will undergo a substantial extension, a new gallery space will incorporate more space for hanging exhibitions and the civic centre foyer will be opened up.
"Bordertown is the birthplace of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and the council has a significant collection of memorabilia from his early life, housed in the centre."
The Tatiara Council is contributing $2.2 million to the project and a community sponsorship will contribute $73,000.
"The Rural Town Development Fund will deliver $2 million over four years to iconic projects that support community infrastructure development and contribute to the attractiveness of regional centres," Minister Maywald says.
"Projects are assessed on their cultural and economic value and take into account community support and involvement in the planning of the project."
In June 2007, the government called for applications for the current round of funding and received 29 applications from towns across the state.
