Media Release | 11 December 2007
Despite the fires burning on the Island, Kangaroo Island is safe and open for business with only around 6% of the Island burnt. This is the message from Tourism Kangaroo Island to people who have holidays booked on the Island.
Although just over half the Island is closed to visitors, people are reminded that the East and North East areas of the Island are easily accessible, completely safe and are home to many of Kangaroo Island's key experiences.
The North Coast Rd has just been opened up to Stokes Bay, allowing people to experience one of the most scenic areas of the Island.
"The East and North East of the Island are completely safe and unaffected by the fires on the Island. It is business as usual for residents and tourist operators in this area," says Tania O'Neil, Tourism Kangaroo Island Marketing Manager.
"This region also happens to be home to the Island's main towns, some of the best beaches and plenty of the famed attractions of Kangaroo Island including some of the Island's stunning cellar doors, art galleries, honey farms, penguin and marine tours and much more. Most of the Island's accommodation is also in this area"
"This is a special part of the Island that most people will spend a few days exploring on any trip to the Island," Ms O'Neil says.
Ferry services and flights are still servicing the Island many times daily.
Visitors are reminded to adhere to police roadblocks and not attempt to drive into any of the prohibited area.
"We advise anyone who is unsure on the status of their accommodation, to contact their accommodation provider to double check. Otherwise, Tourism Kangaroo Island can be contacted for up to date information on what roads are open or closed" Said Ms O'Neil.
