Port Lincoln's iconic foreshore and recreational areas will become a lot greener, thanks to extra irrigation from treated wastewater.
Regional Development Minister Michael O'Brien says a $213,600 grant from the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund (RDIF) will extend wastewater delivery pipes and storage tanks to eight more sites.
"Stage three of Port Lincoln's water reuse project, to cost $1,013,600, will substantially boost the area of foreshore, parks and gardens under irrigation," Mr O'Brien says.
"We have already seen the construction of a disinfection and filtration plant to supply recycled water to a number of reuse sites.
"Most importantly, the additional 69,000kL of reuse water for irrigation will lead to increased savings on the town's potable water consumption.
"This will have a flow-on effect to the local community as more water resources are redirected to increase the local economy's production capacity and boost economic development."
Mr O'Brien says the RDIF plays an important role in helping to meet a number of South Australia's Strategic Plan targets around regional jobs, investment and export earnings.
For 2009-10, the State Government has committed around $2 million to 12 projects.
These RDIF supported projects will generate an estimated 253 jobs, with a total investment of approximately $62 million.
