Assistance for National Foods employees

10 November 2009

The State Government will offer individual re-skilling training packages of up to $10,000 for 64 retrenched workers at National Foods in the Riverland.

Employment, Training and Further Education Minister, Michael O'Brien says a package of assistance measures would also include a one stop shop offering resume development, skills assessment, career guidance, assistance with relocation, counselling and employment referral.

"The Riverland Regional Development Corporation and the Riverland Employment and Skills Formation Network have been working with National Foods on employment and training options for redundant workers over the past two months," Mr O'Brien says.

"Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST) senior officers will meet with the Riverland Development Corporation and National Foods.

"Other services available to the retrenched workers include financial advice through Centrelink, Income support, Special Child Care benefits and assistance for apprentices and trainees to stay connected to the workforce

"DFEEST also provides complementary services through its SA Works Regions at Work Program and the Career Development Centres," Mr O'Brien says.

"Staff are available to discuss the range of options available and assist retrenched workers by referring them to the relevant Commonwealth and State Government services.

"There's also a DFEEST Retrenched Worker Hotline they can contact on 1800 805 488.

"All retrenched workers are fast tracked to the Commonwealth Government Stream 2 Job Services Australia services which provide for more personalised employment services.

"Last week, the State Government announced that the PPP for existing workers would provide more than 80 training places this year, worth more than $159,000, to help workers in the Murraylands and Murray Mallee better their skills and qualifications in areas of high demand, Mr O'Brien says.
