Water improvement for communities

Media Release | 10 July 2008

The regional community near Moorook will soon receive filtered water under a $7.3 million extension of the State Government's Country Water Quality Improvement Program.

Minister for Water Security Karlene Maywald says about 380 regional customers in the Moorook Country Lands water district will receive filtered River Murray water.

This follows the recent announcement that the community of Cooltong would also receive filtered water as part of a $2.8 million pipeline project.

"The project will cover a large Riverland area south of the Murray and including Moorook Country Lands, Wunkar, Mantung and part of Murbko," Minister Maywald says.

"The Moorook Country Lands project includes the construction of a water treatment plant near the Woolpunda pumping station.

'Filtered water from the new plant will be pumped into existing pipelines and delivered to existing SA Water customers.

"It is expected work will begin in September with filtered water being delivered to this system in February 2009.

"The Moorook project is part of the State Government's commitment to deliver improved water quality to regional communities and safeguard supply against any potential water quality issues as a result of the current drought."

Earlier this year, the third stage of the Country Water Quality Improvement Program was completed, a $54 million project fast-tracked by the government to provide filtered water to 17 South Australian communities.
