Regional Development Infrastructure Fund

9 December 2010

The South Australian Government has announced enhancements to the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund (RDIF).

RDIF makes available up to $3 million per year in grants to infrastructure projects in regional areas. The grants are awarded through a competitive merit-based application process.

Regional Development Minister Michael O'Brien says funding would be maintained at current levels, but project guidelines would be improved to enhance economic and community benefits.

"The Regional Development Infrastructure Fund has been highly successful in assisting regional businesses and communities," Mr O'Brien says.

"In the 10 years since inception, RDIF has allocated approximately $29.7 million to 123 projects, generating a total investment expenditure of around $1.4 billion and directly supporting about 5500 jobs.

"However, after seeking feedback from business and community representatives, the Government decided RDIF could be improved.

"There will be stronger preference for projects that can demonstrate public benefits (economic, environmental and social) for communities and industries in addition to benefiting the firm applying for the grant.

"Eligibility will be expanded to a wider range of infrastructure that supports sustainable economic development in the regions, including the application of emerging sustainable technologies that are replacing traditional forms of water and power infrastructure."

Mr O'Brien says a staged application process would be introduced to ensure applicants know their project is eligible before they prepare a full application, and to increase the number of quality applications submitted.

There will be simplified application forms and a streamlined assessment process to reduce time and resources.

The new guidelines and processes will be implemented for the March 2011 RDIF funding round.
