Carter Holt Harvey

3 February 2010

Forestry Minister Paul Caica says the loss of jobs at Carter Holt Harvey at Nangwarry in the State's South East is very unfortunate and the State Government will be working to develop a support package for the workers affected.

"The kind of assistance we will be looking at offering includes employment and outplacement services, access to additional skills training, personal support services, careers advice and links to local jobs," he says.

Minister Caica says the State Government is concerned to ensure that the timber industry remains productive and sustainable in South Australia and has, over the last year, set up a Forestry Industry Development Board.

"The principal task of this advisory board is to develop a strategic plan for the industry and to provide leadership for innovation and sustainable development, including identifying opportunities for and impediments to growth."

Mr Caica says the 'price of log' is a commercial arrangement negotiated between companies and wood suppliers and the contract between Carter Holt Harvey and Forestry SA has been in place for some years.

"Commercial arrangements are not the business of parliamentary enquiries and the issues being raised today are included in the range of factors being considered by the Forestry Industry Development Board."
