Draft Plant Health Bill

Stakeholders are advised public consultation on the draft Plant Health Bill 2007 has been completed and the time for lodgement of submissions has now passed. Submissions were required to be lodged with PIRSA by 9 November 2007.

The draft Bill proposes to update and replace the current Fruit and Plant Protection Act 1992.

The proposed changes to the existing Act will minimise the potential for declared plant pests and diseases to be introduced into the State. It will strengthen legislative measures to ensure the appropriate response in the event of a new plant pest or disease outbreak within South Australia.

Attached is a 'Consultation Package' containing copies of:

  • the Draft Plant Health Bill 2007
  • the Parliamentary Counsel 'Explanation of Clauses'
  • a Discussion Paper
  • a consolidated list of Discussion Paper Questions.

The Consultation Package can be downloaded or you can telephone (08) 8226 7980 to request copies. Copies of the Discussion Paper are available in Vietnamese.

The Discussion Paper explaining the proposed changes to the current legislation has been prepared to accompany the Bill. The 'Explanation of Clauses' has been prepared by Parliamentary Counsel to aid the reader in understanding the various sections of the draft Bill.
