Lupin anthracnose

Lupin anthracnose is a disease caused by a fungal infection that leads to lesions and twisted and deformed growth of lupin stems and pods.

Anthracnose is a major marketing issue for lupins, with confirmed freedom from the disease a major advantage in marketing of lupin crops interstate.

Conditions apply to the transport of lupin grain within South Australia and for transporting to other states that have restricted entry. PIRSA's Plant Health Operations State Quarantine Inspection Service details these conditions in the document Conditions for the movement of lupin grain (.PDF)

It is the responsibility of the 'exporter', that is the person who owns the grain when it enters another state, to arrange the necessary approvals for transporting lupins interstate. Significant penalties apply if lupins are transorted without the necessary approval.

The Fact sheet on lupin anthracnose disease (.PDF) gives more details about the infection cycle and best practice to adopt to avoid the spread of the disease.

Growing Lupins in 2006-07 Season gives more information for South Australian lupin growers about buying and testing sowing seed, paddock inspections and exporting lupin grain.
