Video transcript - Caulerpa Taxifolia

VOICEOVER:
It may look like a harmless seaweed. But this underwater nasty has the potential, with the right conditions, to clog up South Australia’s seabeds.

Caulerpa Taxifolia is a bright green macro-algae that has been introduced into local waters.

So far it’s been eradicated from West Lakes and for some years PIRSA has been controlling it in the Port River

Now a patch has been found at the North Haven Marina, and PIRSA has swung into action.

WILL ZACHARIN, DIRECTOR OF FISHERIES:
We are trying to make sure that the current area of infestation in the Port River and Barker inlet is where it stays. We’re not able to eradicate it because of the complex environment in which its in, but we’re trying to stop it from getting out into the Gulf and having an impact on our broader marine environment and on our fish stocks.

VOICEOVER:
Over the next few weeks, divers will scour the area off the North Haven boat ramp, removing the weed using a high powered suction hose.

Fisheries staff believe the weed was accidentally transferred there from the Port River by a small boat

While the eradication program is underway the public has been urged not to anchor in the area and keep an eye out for any further spreading of the weed outside of known areas.

WILL ZACHARIN, DIRECTOR OF FISHERIES:
If people think they have a piece of Caulerpa, outside of the current area of infestation, we want them to ring us on the Fishwatch number which is 1800 065 522 and let us know where they found this, and certainly bag it and bin it.
