They need to be strategically aligned with their customers. They need good relationships with those customers that will allow information to flow and the critical information that flows is what consumers really value

They embrace those principles they can boost their exports, they can reduce their waste, they can become more profitable. In short they can become much more sustainable as businesses.

VOICEOVER:
As part of his residency Professor Fearne has worked alongside many industries, including the wine, horticulture, lamb and prawn industries to help them become more sustainable and competitive in the global market.

Sponsored by Primary Industries and Resources SA, Professor Fearne’s work aims to improve industry competitiveness, increase exports and reduce environmental impacts along the supply chain.

So what I’ve learned is that there are lots of small scale businesses in South Australia who continue to work independently... and value-chain management is a difficult concept, and if you try to do it all yourself you fail, so what they need to do is recognise that they have to give things up and work in a much more collaborative way as producers and then give the next link in the chain; processors, retailers, ultimately consumers, a much better deal.

VOICEOVER:
A series of case studies will also be available by the end of the year, showcasing some of SA’s top food businesses.

Professor Fearne will deliver a report early next year to the State Government on how SA’s food and wine industry is faring as well as his recommendations for future growth.
