News Release Minister Gail Gago
Minister for Regional Development

Tuesday 22 January, 2013

A grant of $2 million has been awarded to a Whyalla manufacturing and fabrication company from the Enterprise Zone Fund Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback.

E&A Contractors will use the funds towards the upgrade of existing buildings and for the acquisition of heavy engineering equipment, including specialist wind tower fabrication plant, and to refurbish blast and paint facilities.

Minister for Regional Development, Gail Gago, said the expansion would give the region a competitive edge and build local capacity to support economic development and jobs growth.

The project will create approximately 100 full time jobs over four years; with the total cost of the project at approximately $7.5 million.

“In addition to the fabrication of wind towers, the upgraded Whyalla workshop facilities will be better positioned to service mining, processing and infrastructure developments in the Upper Spencer Gulf (USG), Eyre Peninsula and Roxby Downs,” Ms Gago said.

“The project is consistent with the State Government’s Growing Advanced Manufacturing priority, while positioning Whyalla as a manufacturing hub and service centre for the renewable energy industry.

“We are delivering benefits and opening the door to countless opportunities economically, socially and environmentally.”

E&A Contractors Executive Chairman, Stephen Young, thanked Minister Gago and the Government for its support.

“We will now be able to promptly complete the upgrade which is a critical step towards gaining the accreditation from Siemens who are the principal supplier of wind towers,” Mr Young said.

While the fabrication of 20 wind towers for Snowtown II was the immediate opportunity, Mr Young said that EAC would be able to manufacture approximately 100 wind towers per annum once the facilities were established and operational.

“The expanded facility will also diversify our customer base and open up opportunities for us to undertake other large mining, renewable energy and defence sector work,” he said.

The Enterprise Zone Fund Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback is a $4 million rolling fund, available over four years. The Fund is aimed at capturing the benefits of growing industries to further strengthen Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback communities.
