Fishing education will be a hot topic next weekend, with Fishcare Volunteers set to attend a number of local events, spreading the sustainable fishing message.
Volunteers will be present at the Kingston Surf Fishing Competition on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 January, with an information stand located next to the Shell Service Station.
On Sunday 22 January, volunteers will also have a presence at the Great Southern Ocean Boat and Fishing Show 2012 held at the Robe Lake Butler Marina.
State Fishcare Volunteer Coordinator, Toni Cox, said volunteers were a great information resource for recreational fishers and encouraged attendees to visit the Fishcare stand for a chat.
“Our volunteers are very knowledgeable and can answer your questions about fishing rules and regulations,” Ms Cox said.
“They can also provide a range of educational materials, including brochures and measuring devices, helping you make the most of your fishing experience while doing it within the law.”
Ms Cox said the events would also provide the perfect opportunity for passionate local fishers to enquire about joining the volunteer program.
“Fishcare Volunteers are an integral part of the education and awareness initiatives of PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture,” she said.
“They patrol local jetties, boat ramps and fishing spots and help keep anglers up to date with the rules and regulations that apply to recreational fishing, and play a vital role in raising community awareness and spreading the sustainable fishing message to protect our fish stocks.
“If you have a passion for fishing and are looking to give something back to the community, the Fishcare Volunteer program could be for you.”
