Limestone Coast youth invited to name new Fisheries vessel

Thursday, 22 April 2010

PIRSA Fisheries is calling on creative young minds across the Limestone Coast to take part in a naming competition for its newly acquired patrol vessel.

A brand new 8.5m Niaid Rigid Inflatable vessel is currently being built to be stationed at PIRSA Fisheries Mount Gambier office.

Senior Fisheries Officer Barry Tarr said that the new boat will complement the fleet of 23 other vessels that patrol South Australia’s rivers, gulfs and other fishing areas.

“Our fish stocks are community owned, which is why we are seeking ideas from the local community in naming this new vessel – it’s there to help protect their fish stocks so we would like them to help out by naming it,” he said.

“We’re really keen for young people in the region to submit their ideas, and have sent information out to local schools inviting kids to take part.

“The name should be something symbolic to the Limestone Coast area. Vessels in the past have been named after people or things like South Australian explorers or native flora and fauna, however we are leaving it open to the public to be creative and send through their ideas.

“Fisheries Officers from the Mount Gambier station and in Adelaide will then choose their favourite submission, with the winner to be invited for a trip on board the vessel as well as receiving a small prize.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what the creative young minds in the area can come up with.”

Conditions of entry are that the entrant must be a permanent resident of the Limestone Coast and be under 15 years of age.

Entries must include the entrant’s name, age and contact number and can be posted to;
