PIRSA Fisheries has issued a reminder to recreational fishers that the Southern Zone rocklobster fishery will be closed for the whole of October this year.
In August, Fisheries Minister Michael O’Brien announced that the 2010-11 Southern Zone season will now run from 1 November 2010 to 30 April 2011.
PIRSA Fisheries Regional Manager Limestone Coast, Mel Snart, said that it will be illegal to use rocklobster pots or take rocklobster within the Southern Zone outside of these dates.
“This ruling applies to both the commercial and recreational fishing sectors,” she said.
“Anyone found in possession of rock lobster or even setting pots during October will be doing so illegally and may face fines of up to $10,000 under the Fisheries Management Act 2007.
“Fisheries officers will be patrolling the regions waterways both on land and at sea to ensure the October rocklobster fishing closure is adhered to.
“We are seeking the community’s cooperation by firstly abiding by the closure, but also in calling Fishwatch on 1800 065 522 if they see or hear of anyone fishing illegally.
“The rocklobster industry is of vital significance to the Limestone Coast region, so it’s important that we all work together in protecting our fish stocks so that the industry remains sustainable.”
Ms Snart said that these restrictions have been implemented in an effort to constrain the catch and protect the long-term sustainability of the fishery.
Anyone can report illegal fishing activity through the 24 hour FISHWATCH number on 1800 065 522. Callers can choose to remain anonymous.
